2023 Summer Meeting

Ten-X Campground is located 2 miles south of Tusayan and 47 miles north of Williams on U.S. Highway 180/AZ Highway 64. The campground is only about 4 miles from the south entrance to Grand Canyon National Park.

At the AZSRM summer meeting at the Ten-X Campground the University of Arizona will host a workshop that will move beyond the basics of VF and demonstrate the actual components of a VF system. Participants will learn about the VF software where all tasks associated with implementing a VF system are completed. A mobile radio base station will be on hand for a live demonstration about the importance of proper placement to maximize base station coverage. The art and science of collaring livestock will also be discussed and demonstrated. Finally, we will cover aspects of animal welfare, potential policy implications, and the next steps for VF research in Arizona. There is a lot to know about VF and we want to share our lessons learned with you.

Virtual fencing is exciting, new, and has a lot of potential—and risk. We hope this workshop empowers you to effectively evaluate VF for sustainable rangeland management.

This work is supported by USDA NIFA Western SARE (project number WPDP22-016), AFRI IDEAS (award no. 2022-10726), the Arizona Experiment Station, and the Marley Endowment for Sustainable Rangeland Stewardship.

Outside of the Virtual fence workshop scheduled for Thursday, August 10th, the meeting will include student activities, a field tour centered on rare plants and timber, an archaeology tour/discussion, and good old fashion SRM fun!

Webinar

Native American Rangelands Partnership

The Native American Rangeland Training Initiative (NARTI) facilitates the collaboration with tribal partners and federal agencies to implement a long-term strategy that addresses several critical disconnects that impact the sustainable management of rangelands in Indian Country. Our Tribal partners agreed that it was essential to train and support staff in their efforts to manage rangelands and other natural resources for their communities. In addition, this effort provides support for federal and local agency staff who work with tribes in natural resource management, and also facilitates learning and collaboration between Tribes, agencies, and academic institutions. This program is hosted by the Society for Range Management and funded by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the US Forest Service. A recording of the webinar will be posted on our website for those who cannot attend at the scheduled time.

Please Note: the time listed here is relative to Arizona’s timezone (MST). The webinar is scheduled for 2pm CST.
